Before you start a crochet blanket, the first question is simple: how big should it be? A baby blanket, a sofa throw and a queen bedspread are very different projects in time and yarn. This crochet blanket sizes chart gives common sizes in inches and centimeters, explains what each size is used for and shows how to resize a mosaic crochet pattern.

Quick Answer

Common crochet blanket sizes are about 30 × 30 in for a baby blanket, 36 × 45 in for a crib, 50 × 60 in for a throw, 66 × 90 in for a twin and 90 × 100 in for a queen. These are typical guidelines, not strict rules. Measure the bed or sofa you are making it for.

How to Change the Size of a Mosaic Crochet Pattern

Mosaic charts are fixed grids, so you cannot simply add stitches in the middle without changing the picture. Instead, use one of these methods:

  • Change yarn weight and hook: a #5 bulky yarn makes the same chart larger; a DK yarn makes it smaller.
  • Add a border: extra rows and stitches around the design add width and length without touching the picture.
  • Add plain rows at the top and bottom: good for making a throw longer to fit a bed.
  • Swatch first: measure your gauge, then multiply to predict the finished size.

Quick formula

Finished width = chart stitches ÷ your stitches per inch. Example: a 200-stitch chart at 3.5 stitches per inch gives about 57 inches. Do the same for rows to get the length.

Which Size Should You Make?

FAQ

What is the standard size of a crochet throw blanket?

A throw is usually about 50 × 60 inches (127 × 152 cm), big enough to cover one adult on a sofa.

What size is a crochet baby blanket?

Baby blankets are commonly 30 × 30 to 40 × 40 inches. Crib blankets are larger, around 36 × 45 to 45 × 60 inches.

How do I make a crochet blanket bigger?

Use a heavier yarn and bigger hook, or add border rounds. For mosaic charts, avoid changing the stitch count of the design itself.

Does yarn weight change blanket size?

Yes. The same chart worked in bulky yarn will be noticeably larger than in DK yarn. Always check your gauge.
